Network Rail has announced annual pre-tax profit of £1.6bn for 2007/08.and has said staff will receive total bonuses of £55m.
The chief executive of Network Rail has received a bonus of over
£500,000 only weeks after the company was fined a record £14 million
for the Christmas disruption on the railways caused by overrunning
engineering works.
Iain Coucher has been paid an annual bonus of £306,000 plus an
additional bonus of £205,000 under the company’s long-term incentive
plan. With his salary of £585,000, his total pay this year will exceed
£1million despite missing targets for punctuality and financial

£8.6 billion West Coast plan |

Rail regulators have accepted a revised plan for completing the £8.6bn upgrade of the West Coast Mainline.
Network Rail will now press ahead with weekend closures throughout the
summer to modernise the London to Scotland route by December. In view of previous problems, the Office of Rail Regulation warned
Network Rail it must make every effort to minimise disruption to
passengers.
In January, the ORR fined Network Rail a record £14m after three New Year engineering projects overran.

Cable theft costs Network Rail about £10 million a year |

Helicopter patrols reducce cable theft costs.
The use of high-visibility patrols and new technology have played a
significant role in helping to reduce delays to rail passengers caused
by cable thefts on the East Coast Main Line.
Network Rail's figures show a reduction in delays on the route from 205,000 minutes in 2006/07 to 151,000 in 2007/08.
